Why do some horses eat treated fence posts

There seems to be a lot of damaged fence posts and rails from horses eating them.Could this not be simply stopped by putting a mineral block in their paddock ?

Hi Andy

I think these fence posts are treated with Copper Chrome Arsenic (CCA) this is a form of Salt and could be the reason the horses are eating the post due to a lack of salt, I had a similar problem last year, I got in a mob of R1 Dairy Heifers to graze, they went mad of the fence posts also, found out they needed Salt blocks, which they went silly on, have those same heifers on now as R2s and they have had salt blocks over the past year and have not had one post touched, so maybe salt blocks out for these horses could be worth a try

Yeah I absolutely agree with Ken,

You can see some dogs licking cement, it's simply because they get either iron or some other mineral from it. So Thumbs up to kens theory.
